Showing Up When It Matters

Daily writing prompt
Describe a positive thing a family member has done for you.

There are many ways people show up for you, and sometimes, the ones that stay with you the most are the quiet ones.

One of the most meaningful things a family member has done for me was something that lasted only a few minutes – but meant so much more than that.

On my wedding day, my cousin walked me down the aisle.

In the days leading up to my wedding, it took me a lot of courage to ask him if he would do it – to step in on behalf of my dad.
It didn’t take him long to reply, and I still remember how I felt reading his message – a mix of happiness and relief, all at once.

It was a role that was meant for my dad.
But since he’s no longer here, my cousin stepped in – not to replace him, but simply to be there for me in that moment.

I remember feeling a mix of emotions as I stood there, about to walk in. It was a day filled with happiness, but also one that quietly held the absence of someone I deeply wished could be there.

And then, I walked.

He didn’t say much. He didn’t need to.
But having him beside me made that moment feel steadier, less overwhelming.

It wasn’t about grand gestures or perfect words.
It was about presence.

About someone choosing to stand with you when it matters.

That short walk down the aisle carried more meaning than I can fully put into words. It was a reminder that even when something feels missing, there are still people who step forward, in their own ways, to support you.

And sometimes, that quiet kind of support is the most powerful kind there is.

That short walk down the aisle carried more meaning than I can fully put into words. It was a reminder that even when something feels missing, there are still people who step forward, in their own ways, to support you.

My cousin was there not just on that day, but even before — someone who showed up when I needed it most, in moments I will never forget.

And as I took those steps forward, I realised something quietly comforting – that even though my dad wasn’t there to walk beside me,
I was never walking alone.
