Ashes in the Light

Words left behind in half-light

Lights, and the Start of My Birthday Trip

It was a busy month of November — with work, floral projects, and travel all happening at once. In my earlier post about my future travel plans, I mentioned how excited I was for my upcoming Hong Kong trip. Now that I’m finally back, and have a little breathing space after all the work and wedding planning days, I can share how everything unfolded — starting with our very first evening in the city.

For my birthday this year, my husband brought me to Hong Kong, and our first night was all about slow moments and simple joys.

We checked in to Mondrian Hong Kong at Tsim Sha Tsui. The hotel was actually great — the room was spacious enough for both of us to open our luggage fully (which is always a blessing), especially since we needed to repack before heading over to Lantau Island later in the trip.

We spent about four days in Hong Kong before moving on, but on our first night, we started by exploring the area around our hotel. We made our way to watch the Symphony of Lights, standing by the harbour as the skyline lit up. It was a little underwhelming at first, but being there — with the breeze, the soft music, and the city lights — felt unexpectedly calming. Maybe it’s age, maybe it’s timing, maybe it’s the moment… but it made me feel happy and exactly where I needed to be.

Since we woke up early for our flight and were already feeling tired, we ended Day 1 a little earlier too.

A quiet start to my birthday trip. Sometimes the gentle moments are the ones that stay with you the longest. 💛

P.S. I’ll be sharing my trip day by day — stay tuned!
