Lunch at MODU – A New Korean Gem at Mandarin Gallery

I recently checked out MODU, a new Samgyetang specialty Korean restaurant that just opened at Mandarin Gallery—and honestly, I’m already thinking about going back.

I went with an ex-colleague to have lunch with our ex-boss, and we dropped by during a weekday lunch. The space was modern, clean, and surprisingly cozy for something so new. From the service to the food, it already felt smooth and thoughtful.

We each ordered a main and added on two side dishes to share. Every dish was well-executed without feeling too heavy. The flavours were balanced—rich, but not overwhelming. If you’re a fan of Korean food, you’ll probably appreciate that they’re not just sticking to the usual basics, but also not trying too hard to reinvent things. Just good, solid food done well.

The service was warm and attentive, which always makes a difference—especially at a new spot. The staff were happy to offer recommendations and explain the menu, which I appreciated. It wasn’t the first visit for our ex-boss (he’d already been there twice!), and the staff even remembered him and welcomed him back with a warm greeting.

And can we talk about the vibes? MODU has that nice balance—stylish, but not stiff. The kind of place you could easily swing by for a casual weekday meal, but also bring friends or family for something a bit nicer.

If you’re looking for a new Korean restaurant to try in town, MODU at Mandarin Gallery is definitely worth a visit. Great food, thoughtful service, and a space that just feels right. I’m already thinking about who to bring along next time.
