Ashes in the Light

Words left behind in half-light

A Floaty Afternoon at the Balloon Museum

I visited the Balloon Museum at one of the event halls in Marina Bay Sands with a good friend last week. We went on a weekday afternoon and picked the 2:30pm time slot. Even though we arrived a little earlier, the staff were nice enough to let us in anyway.

It turned out to be such a fun and refreshing way to spend the afternoon. I didn’t really know what to expect, but it ended up being this playful mix of art, lights, and pure randomness—in the best possible way.

The whole space was filled with balloon-themed installations—some loud and bouncy, others surprisingly calming. Each room had its own vibe, from bright and vibrant to soft and dreamy. There was one exhibit with a giant balloon pit you could sink into (yes, we did!), light tunnels to walk through, and a few spots where you could just stop and take in all the tiny details.

It was fun seeing how everyone interacted with the space—some were busy taking photos, while others were just soaking it in. I liked that you didn’t feel rushed at all. You could wander, sit, lie down, or just enjoy the moment at your own pace.

We probably spent close to two hours there, mostly because we got a bit too comfy at the ball pit—it was surprisingly hard to leave!

My favourite part? Definitely the rooms that felt slightly surreal, where the colours, lights, and sound made everything feel floaty and a little otherworldly. For a while, I completely forgot I was in the middle of Marina Bay Sands.

If you’re looking for something a little different to do in Singapore—a break from your usual mall-and-café routine—the Balloon Museum is worth checking out. It’s not your typical art exhibit, but that’s what makes it fun. Just go with an open mind… and maybe wear something comfy in case you find yourself rolling around with balloons too.

PS: The “Pop Air – Art is Inflatable” exhibition at the Balloon Museum in Singapore runs until August 31, 2025.
